Take Your Kid to Work Day

Luke informed us that his teachers informed them that there would be little work done at school today because today is "Take Your Kid to Work Day." Then he looked at us longingly, coyly and with little hope in his eyes because he was pretty sure we'd kick him out the front door and off to school.

Stan works from home and the kids have a pretty good idea what that looks like. Stan works at sites throughout the area but we can't go on them because we're not "OSHA approved," he reminds us often. But as we drive by them he points, "Look kids, that's my site!" Kind of like Chevy Chase in European Vacation: Kids! Big Ben! Only the boys aren't in London peering out the windows at a famous site, they're in the back of a van in New Jersey looking up from a GameBoy at a refinery.

So we made sure it was a free day and let Luke stay home. I decided it'd be a good day for him to see Cezanne, since I couldn't wait to go back Luke's an artist and I support that whenever I can. He promptly went out to Stan's office for a while to make it legitimate as I went online and got us tickets for the exhibit.

About an hour later I met them out on the driveway and Stan said, proudly, "I gave him a presentation on my projects and sites, maps, reports, etc." "Woowee!" I said, "That must have been fun! Now, let's get the heck outta here."

So we jumped in the car and my parents pulled in behind us. And these are what my mother was coming to show us. She's been cleaning her dad's home and found these handy things. Know what they are?

Finally we arrived at the museum. Here's a new angle I haven't shown you yet. Isn't it beautiful? I am so in love with this building.

We found a spot to park right at the middle of the Rocky steps which gave us that view of the city. Luke told me that there was a hex on the city for a while because someone went and built buildings that were higher than William Penn in the center of town. Finally someone put Billy's hat on the highest building and the Phillies won the World Series. Whew. Luke tells me that you can see it in this picture. You may have to click it.
Here is my favorite middle child in front of my favorite Minnesota dolomite.

I just clicked (sans flash) on all the things that struck my fancy in the European Art 1100 - 1500 wing.

Below was a room devoted to carvings for tombs.

I couldn't take photos in the Cezanne exhibit and boy was it packed! Here are artists' quotes about Cezanne in the pamphlet.
Max Beckmann (German, 1884–1950)"Cézanne was my greatest love and still is when I think of French art."
Georges Braque (French, 1882–1963)"To my way of thinking, there is no master equal to Cézanne."
Alberto Giacometti (Swiss, 1901–1966)"Cézanne did not … seek to be original. And yet there is no painter so original as Cézanne."
Arshile Gorky (American, born Armenia, 1904–1948)"Cézanne is the greatest artist, shall I say, that has lived."
Marsden Hartley (American, 1877–1943)"[Cézanne had] ideas that were to make the world of painting over again."
Fernand Léger (French, 1881–1955)"[Cézanne’s] influence was so strong that in order to free myself I had to move all the way to abstraction."
Brice Marden (American, born 1938)"Cézanne, my hero."
Henri Matisse (French, 1869–1954)"I thought: If Cézanne is right, I am right. Because I knew Cézanne had made no mistake."
Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973)"[Cézanne] was my one and only master! Don’t you think I looked at his pictures?"
Jeff Wall (Canadian, born 1946)"I have always admired Cézanne."

On our way out we tipped our hats to Billy Penn.

Know what these are yet? Need another view?

I want to go to work with you.
I have never seen anything like what your mom is holding. They look like galoshes for high heels.

You are correct Mom - galoshes for high heels. I wanted my mom to wear them to church, but she says she doesn't have any high heels anymore.

Wow! What a post! All interesting for sure. And those are impressive sycamores. Thanks.

I notice you have a weight-loss thing on your side bar. Good work! I just reached my Weight Watcher goal of 30 pounds last night. Yee-haw! My First Wife has told me to stop cuz I'm getting too skinny. I told her there ain't no such thing. We celebrated this morning with a breakfast burrito at a breakfast/lunch restaurant. Fun.

Good luck to you.
