I got to thinking about the title of your post. "Well, He does" can also be found in a Kurt Vonnegut novel. An innocent young woman on an elevator said it after she told somebody that Jesus loved him. The other character poo-pooed her. I don't remember which book.

You read Kurt Vonnegut stuff, didn't you? Remember that?
